The Marine Corps has two birthdays because it was initially established on November 10\, 1775\, by the Second Continental Congress\, and then re-established on July 11\, 1798. While both dates are significant\, the Corps officially celebrates its birthday on November 10th\, the date of its initial founding\, to honor its long history and tradition. \nFor a long period (from 1799 until 1921)\, the Marine Corps celebrated its birthday on July 11\, commemorating the date of its re-establishment. However\, in 1921\, Marine Corps Order No. 47 was issued\, changing the official birthday celebration to November 10th\, to recognize the original founding during the Revolutionary War.

SUMMARY:Staunton Military Academy Memorial Wall ceremony to honor Capt. William Green
DESCRIPTION:The SMA Alumni Foundation Board of Directors\, meeting via teleconference on Dec. 8th\, accepted the recommendations\nof the Memorial Wall Judging Committee and voted to place Warren Hutton SMA ’75\, Capt. William W. Greene Sr.\, USA-Ret. And Walter “Chick” Crawford on the museum’s Memorial Wall.\nPlaques highlighting their lives and achievements will be recognized at the Memorial Wall ceremony during the SMA reunion on\nFriday April 10th.\nHutton was part of the next-to-last class to graduate from SMA\, where he led in academic\, military\,\nand athletic pursuit. He had a successful career in law and in business\, and he was a leader in community\nactivities.\nCapt. Green was one of the original Army “Buffalo Soldiers” who became an officer during World War I. His heroic actions as a company commander were later recognized with the award of the Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star for valor on the battlefield in France in October 1918.\nChick Crawford spent almost 50 years serving all the cadets who passed through the SMA Mess Hall. He rose from dishwasher to manage the facility. Chick was well-known and liked by all the surviving alumni of the academy.
