Staunton Military Academy Memorial Wall ceremony to honor Capt. William Green

The SMA Alumni Foundation Board of Directors, meeting via teleconference on Dec. 8th, accepted the recommendations
of the Memorial Wall Judging Committee and voted to place Warren Hutton SMA ’75, Capt. William W. Greene Sr., USA-Ret. And Walter “Chick” Crawford on the museum’s Memorial Wall.
Plaques highlighting their lives and achievements will be recognized at the Memorial Wall ceremony during the SMA reunion on
Friday April 10th.
Hutton was part of the next-to-last class to graduate from SMA, where he led in academic, military,
and athletic pursuit. He had a successful career in law and in business, and he was a leader in community
activities.
Capt. Green was one of the original Army “Buffalo Soldiers” who became an officer during World War I. His heroic actions as a company commander were later recognized with the award of the Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star for valor on the battlefield in France in October 1918.
Chick Crawford spent almost 50 years serving all the cadets who passed through the SMA Mess Hall. He rose from dishwasher to manage the facility. Chick was well-known and liked by all the surviving alumni of the academy.
