VFW Post 7814 in Staunton, Virginia, also known as the Thomas-Fields Post, has a significant history rooted in the African American community.
- Founding: The post was established by 42 African American World War II veterans who were not allowed to join the existing local VFW post because of segregation. They then obtained a charter to create their own post.
- Namesake: The post honors Charles Thomas and Glenwood Fields, two African American men from Staunton who died serving in World War II.
- Community Involvement: The Thomas-Fields Post is an active civic organization in the African American community of Staunton and Augusta County and participates in local veterans’ activities, including honoring fallen veterans.
- Recognition: VFW Post 7814 has received recognition for its work, being named a Meritorious Post by the State VFW and an All-American Post by the National VFW.
- Inclusivity: While emphasizing the heritage of African American and minority veterans, the post is open to all eligible veterans.
VFW Post 7814 serves as an example of how African American veterans in Staunton responded to adversity by forming their own organization to support veterans and the community.
